Marthudah – Mental Health First Aid

Mental health is something that affects us all — in our families, our communities, and our workplaces. At Djeleanna, we recognise that creating a mentally healthy workplace is not only the right thing to do, but essential to our people’s wellbeing and the success of our industry.

That’s why we’ve proudly signed up to participate in Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training, delivered by Marthudah under license from MHFA Australia.

This nationally accredited 2-day course is designed to empower our team with the skills to:

  • Recognise early signs and symptoms of mental health and substance misuse issues
  • Provide effective support and guidance toward professional treatment
  • Develop care plans for ongoing mental health support
  • Build a workplace culture that is safe, understanding, and proactive
  • Understand the prevalence, impact, and treatments for common disorders
  • Apply self-care strategies as Mental Health First Aiders

The training covers a broad spectrum of conditions and situations, including:

  • Depression and anxiety
  • Substance use issues
  • Psychosis
  • Suicidal thoughts and behaviours
  • Panic attacks
  • Non-suicidal self-injury
  • Traumatic events

This evidence-based course has been rigorously evaluated and consistently shows improvements in knowledge, confidence, and the ability to provide meaningful help.

Benefits for Djeleanna and Our People

At Djeleanna, we care deeply about the wellbeing of every person in our team. Signing up for Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training is not just a professional development step — it’s a commitment to looking after one another, building trust, and creating a workplace where everyone feels seen, heard, and supported.

Here’s how this training supports you:

  • Empowers You to Help Others: The training gives you the confidence to support teammates, family, or friends who may be struggling. You’ll be able to recognise when someone’s not OK and know how to respond with compassion and the right tools.
  • Reduces the Stigma: Mental health is often misunderstood or left unspoken. MHFA helps open the conversation in a safe, respectful way — making it easier for everyone to seek help when they need it. This training will also give you the skills to have these, sometimes, uncomfortable conversations.
  • Builds a Supportive Culture: By understanding each other better, we create a stronger, more connected workplace. The training helps foster empathy, kindness, and a sense of safety across the team.
  • Strengthens Self-Awareness: You’ll also gain insight into your own mental health — how to care for yourself, notice signs of stress or burnout, and reach out when support is needed. It's not just about helping others — it's about helping yourself, too.

The Instructor – Luke Mettner, Marthudah Pty Ltd

This MHFA training is delivered by Luke Mettner, a qualified mental health nurse and experienced educator with over 20 years in the field. Luke holds a BSc (RN) from Curtin University and a Post Graduate Certificate in Acute Response Mental Health from Notre Dame.

He has worked across rural and metro settings, most recently as Programme Coordinator for Youth Mental Health with WACHS (2019–2024), overseeing services across the entire Wheatbelt region. Luke has been recognised multiple times by Aboriginal Elders for excellence in cultural practice and is deeply connected to the Pilbara — raised in Wickham, Roebourne, and Karratha, and connected to the Kuruma people through his late stepfather.

His experience across all age groups, combined with his cultural insight, makes him an exceptional educator and a trusted partner for Djeleanna.

Djeleanna is proud to take this step in creating a workplace that not only supports mental health but leads by example.
